MP Sub Engineer Eligibility
- Qualification: each post has its own requirement. For Sub Engineer (Civil) in the Rural Engineering Service it is a 3-year diploma in civil engineering from a recognised institute. Check the post you want.
- Employment exchange: the rule book says a live registration with the Madhya Pradesh employment exchange is compulsory for all posts.
- Domicile: reservation, age relaxation and fee concession apply only to Madhya Pradesh residents. Candidates from other states can apply only against unreserved posts, with no relaxation.
- Nationality: Indian citizens; Nepal citizens can be considered if they hold the required certificate.
- Documents: you need valid certificates for your claimed category; cut-off for validity is the application date.
MP Sub Engineer Age Limit
The minimum age is 18 and the maximum is 40 years, counted on 1 January 2026. The maximum rises to 45 years for SC, ST and OBC candidates, women, government and public-sector employees, and home guards, subject to the rules. EWS candidates get no age relaxation. Ex-servicemen and certain government employees get extra relaxation as the rule book describes, but the total can never exceed 45 years for any category, except for contract staff and other cases the rules name. Age is taken from your high school or equivalent certificate.
MP Sub Engineer Exam Pattern
There is one computer-based paper of 200 marks, in two parts. The marking is 1 mark for each correct answer and 0.25 marks deducted for each wrong answer.
| Part | Subjects | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| A | General knowledge, general Hindi, general English, general maths, reasoning, general science, computer knowledge | 100 |
| B | Technical trade-based questions (civil engineering for Paper C) | 100 |
| Total | 200 |
The exam is held in two shifts a day. The first shift runs 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon (reporting 7:00 to 8:00 AM) and the second runs 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM (reporting 12:30 to 1:30 PM), so each paper lasts 3 hours. When an exam is held in several shifts, MPESB prepares the result with Normalised Equi-Percentile scaling, so your final score is a percentile, not just your raw marks. Minimum qualifying marks are 50% for unreserved candidates and 40% for SC, ST, OBC and persons with disabilities; EWS candidates get a 10% relaxation as per the circular.
MP Sub Engineer Civil Syllabus
MPESB's rule book names the subjects but gives no topic list, so the topics below are the usual diploma-level civil subjects, not an official list. Part A covers the seven general subjects in the pattern table above. For Part B (civil) expect these areas:
| Subject | Typical topics |
|---|---|
| Building materials and construction | Bricks, cement, aggregates, timber, masonry, finishes |

MP Sub Engineer Selection Process and Reservation
The stages are the computer-based exam, then document verification by the department that asked for the post. The Board forwards the names of qualified candidates and the department checks the educational and other certificates. A reserve list of 15% of posts is kept and is valid for one year from the result or until a new result, whichever is earlier. Ties are broken by the proportionate marks, then by age.
Vertical reservation is ST 20%, SC 16%, OBC 27% (subject to the High Court decision) and EWS 10%. Women get 35% horizontal reservation, persons with disabilities 6%, and ex-servicemen 10% for Class III posts. The department decides the number of posts in each category, not the Board.
MP Sub Engineer Salary
The Sub Engineer (Civil) post in the Rural Engineering Service has a pay scale of Rs. 32,800 to Rs. 1,03,600. Technician-level posts such as Technical Assistant are at Rs. 25,300 to Rs. 80,500 (Level 6). During probation, new joiners are paid a stipend of 70% of the minimum pay in the first year, 80% in the second and 90% in the third; the full pay scale starts after probation is completed.
