Only male candidates can apply for JE posts in the Border Roads Organisation. SSC also does not accept qualifications earned through open-distance or online mode in engineering, except where the law specifically recognises them. Ex-servicemen get age relaxation, but there is no ex-servicemen reservation for these Group B posts.
Age limit. The age is counted as on 1 August 2026. For the 30-year posts you must be born between 2 August 1996 and 1 August 2008, and for the 32-year posts between 2 August 1994 and 1 August 2008.

How to Apply for SSC JE 2026
Applications were online only, and the window closed on 22 September 2026. Here is how the process worked, for reference and for next year.
- Register on the new SSC website (ssc.gov.in) with a One-Time Registration (OTR). OTRs made on the old site, ssc.nic.in, do not work.
- Log in and choose "Apply" for the Junior Engineer Examination 2026.
- Fill in your personal, educational and department details, and upload your photo and signature.
- Pay the fee, if you are not exempt.
- Submit the form and keep a copy of the confirmation.
The correction window ran from 28 to 30 September 2026, with a correction charge. The helpline for application problems is 180 030 930 63. You can also apply through the mySSC mobile app.
SSC JE Civil 2026 Selection Process and Exam Pattern
The selection has three stages: Paper I, Paper II and document verification. Both papers are computer-based, objective (multiple choice) and set in Hindi and English. Paper I is qualifying in nature, and your Paper II score decides the final merit.
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | Duration | Negative marking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper I | General Intelligence and Reasoning | 50 | 50 | 2 hours (shared) | 0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper I | General Awareness | 50 | 50 | (same paper) | 0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper I | General Engineering (Civil and Structural) | 100 | 100 | (same paper) | 0.25 per wrong answer |
| Paper II | General Engineering (Civil and Structural) | 100 | 300 | 2 hours | 1 per wrong answer |
Candidates who are eligible to use a scribe get 2 hours 40 minutes for each paper.
Two points matter for your strategy. First, Paper II carries 300 marks and a heavy penalty of 1 mark for each wrong answer, so accuracy beats guessing. Second, Paper I has only a qualifying role, but its engineering section is at diploma level, so the same preparation helps you in both papers.
Minimum qualifying marks. You must score at least 30% in both papers if you are unreserved, 25% if you are OBC or EWS, and 20% in all other categories. SSC shortlists candidates for Paper II category-wise, using normalised Paper I marks, and draws separate merit lists for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical and Mechanical), Scientific Assistant (IMD) and JE (Telecom). If the exam runs in several shifts, SSC normalises the marks. Only normalised Paper II scores decide your final merit, and posts are allotted by merit and your preference.
Help on the screen. A scientific calculator appears on the exam screen for the whole exam, and the IS 456:2000 tables and the steam table open under "Useful Data". You cannot carry physical tables or a calculator into the exam lab, so practise with the on-screen tools in your mock tests.
Answer keys. SSC publishes tentative answer keys after the exam. You can challenge a question online for Rs. 50 per question, which is not refundable. There is no re-evaluation or re-checking of scores.
SSC JE Civil 2026 Syllabus
The notice sets the engineering questions at about the level of a diploma in Civil Engineering. Part-A (Civil and Structural) is the subject in both Paper I and Paper II, so one preparation covers both papers. Here are the topics SSC lists.

|---|---|
| Engineering mechanics | System of forces, free-body diagrams, equilibrium, internal forces, friction, centre of mass, moment of inertia |
| Solid mechanics | Bending moment and shear force in determinate beams, stress and strain, simple bending, flexural and shear stresses, torsion, buckling of columns, combined stresses |

Paper I also has two common sections. General Intelligence and Reasoning covers verbal and non-verbal questions such as analogies, classification, series, visual memory and arithmetical reasoning. General Awareness covers current events, everyday science, and India's history, culture, geography, economy and polity, without needing special study. The official notice has the full syllabus.
SSC JE Civil Salary, Job Profile and Career Growth
All SSC JE posts are Group B (non-gazetted) at Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix, with a pay range of Rs. 35,400 to Rs. 1,12,400. On top of basic pay, you receive dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and other benefits. The in-hand amount varies with your posting city and department, and the notice does not give it.
A Junior Engineer (Civil) typically prepares estimates and drawings, supervises construction and maintenance work on site, checks the quality of materials and measures completed work for payment. Departments such as CPWD, MES and BRO run buildings, roads and defence infrastructure, so the work is hands-on and project-based.
With experience and departmental exams, JEs are promoted to Assistant Engineer and then Executive Engineer, with the pay and responsibility growing at each step. Promotion timelines differ by department.
SSC JE Civil Preparation Tips
Paper I is planned for October to November 2026, so you have a few weeks to get exam-ready. Here is a plan that matches the pattern.
- Master the engineering core first. The Civil and Structural section is 100 of the 200 marks in Paper I and all 300 marks in Paper II. Cover the thirteen subject areas in the syllabus table before anything else.
- Rank subjects by weight and strength. Start with high-yield topics such as surveying, soil mechanics, RCC and steel design, estimating and transportation, then fill the gaps.
- Protect your accuracy. Paper II deducts 1 mark per wrong answer, so skip a question when you are unsure.
- Keep reasoning and GK light but daily. Spend 30 to 45 minutes a day on reasoning and general awareness so they do not hold back your Paper I score.
- Practise full-length mock tests. Take timed tests on a computer, because the real exam is computer-based, 2 hours goes quickly, and you will use the on-screen calculator and the IS 456 and steam tables.
- Revise weekly. Keep a short formula sheet for strength of materials, soil mechanics and hydraulics and revise it every week.
