RRB JE 2026-27 Eligibility, Age Limit and Fee
Education. You need a 3-year diploma in the relevant engineering discipline, or an equivalent degree, such as a 3-year B.Sc. in Civil Engineering or a B.E./B.Tech. For DMS, a 3-year diploma in any engineering discipline is enough. You must hold the qualification by 13 September 2026, so final-year students awaiting results are not eligible. If you hold qualifications in more than one group, you choose one exam group for CBT 2. The groups are:
- Mechanical and allied engineering, including production, automobile and mechatronics.
- Electrical and allied engineering.
- Electronics and allied engineering, including computer science and IT.
- Civil and allied engineering.
Post-wise qualifications and medical standards are in Annexure A of the notification.
Age limit. You must be 18 to 33 years old on 1 January 2027, so you must have been born between 2 January 1994 and 1 January 2009 if you are in the unreserved or EWS category. The upper limit is relaxed as follows, and relaxations are not cumulative.

RRB JE 2026-27 Selection Process and Exam Pattern
The selection runs in four stages, and both CBTs are objective tests with negative marking of one-third of a question's marks for each wrong answer.
- CBT 1: A screening test common to all posts.
- CBT 2: Open to candidates shortlisted from CBT 1 at 15 times the community-wise vacancies of each RRB, based on normalised CBT 1 marks.
- Document verification: Candidates are shortlisted in a 1:1 ratio to the vacancies, based on CBT 2 merit and the options they filled.
- Medical examination: The standard is A-3, B-1 or C-1, depending on the post.
The RRBs then empanel candidates by merit, document verification and medical fitness, and the Railway Administrations issue the appointment offers. If candidates tie on merit, the older candidate ranks higher, followed by alphabetical order of the given name.
| Detail | CBT 1 | CBT 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100 | 150 |
| Marks | 100 | 150 |
| Duration | 90 minutes | 120 minutes |
| Duration with scribe | 120 minutes | 160 minutes |
| Negative marking | 1/3 mark per wrong answer | 1/3 mark per wrong answer |
| Role | Screening | Decides merit |
Minimum qualifying marks. The cut-off percentages are 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC-NCL and SC, and 25% for ST. PwBD candidates can get a relaxation of up to 2 marks. CBT 2 also provides an on-screen virtual calculator.
RRB JE CBT 1 Syllabus

RRB JE CBT 2 Syllabus
CBT 2 decides your merit, and the Technical Abilities section alone carries 100 of the 150 marks.
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
| Physics and Chemistry | 15 | 15 |
| Basics of Computers and Applications | 10 | 10 |
| Basics of Environment and Pollution Control | 10 | 10 |
| Technical Abilities | 100 | 100 |
- General Awareness: Same areas as CBT 1 — current affairs, Indian geography, history and culture, polity, economy, environment, sports, and science and technology.
- Physics and Chemistry: Physics and chemistry up to the CBSE Class 10 level.

Technical Abilities. You pick one exam group in your application, and your 100 technical questions come from that group's subjects. The topic-wise syllabus for each group is in Annexure VIII of the official notification — study that list for your group first, because a wrong answer costs one-third of a mark.

| Mechanical and allied engineering | Mechanical, production, automobile and mechatronics |

All posts in this notification are at Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission matrix, with an initial pay of Rs. 35,400. Railway employees also receive dearness allowance, house rent allowance, transport allowance and other benefits, and the in-hand amount depends on the posting city.
RRB JE 2026-27 Preparation Tips
CBT 1 is close, so plan your study around the scoring pattern.
- Secure CBT 1 first. It has 100 questions in 90 minutes, and Mathematics and General Science carry 30 questions each. Practise both daily, because they are the quickest marks to score.
- Study General Science up to Class 10. Revise the NCERT science chapters, since questions stay at the Class 10 level.
- Start your technical subjects early. CBT 2 has 100 technical questions out of 150, so begin your exam group's syllabus now rather than after CBT 1.
- Keep reasoning and awareness daily. Spend 30 to 45 minutes on reasoning practice and current affairs each day.
- Respect the negative marking. Each wrong answer costs one-third of a mark, so skip questions you cannot narrow down.
- Take timed mock tests. Practise full CBT 1 papers in 90 minutes and CBT 2 papers in 120 minutes, and review every wrong answer.
