PSU Jobs Through GATE for Civil Engineers: Companies, Pay and Selection
Which PSUs hire civil engineers through GATE, what the posts pay, how selection works and when to apply — a guide for GATE 2027 civil candidates.
A good GATE score can lead to a government job without a separate written exam. Several public sector undertakings (PSUs) shortlist civil engineers using the GATE score itself, then call them for a group discussion or interview. This guide covers which PSUs have hired civil engineers this way, what the posts pay, how selection works, and what to do before the GATE 2027 exam on 6 to 21 February 2027.
PSU Jobs Through GATE at a Glance
- Who can apply: B.E. or B.Tech civil graduates with a valid GATE score in the Civil Engineering (CE) paper. Exact eligibility criteria — minimum marks, age limit, category relaxations — differ by PSU, so check your target PSU's own notice.
- How to apply: separately on each PSU's own website after the result. There is no single application for all PSUs.
- Selection: GATE score first, then a group discussion or interview in most cases, followed by document verification and a medical test.
- Pay: PSU engineering posts are recruited into IDA pay scales rather than a flat monthly figure — see the salary section below for POWERGRID's officially disclosed scales.
- GATE 2027 result: 19 March 2027. Most PSU civil notices tend to appear in the weeks and months after a GATE result, once each PSU opens its own recruitment cycle.
Which PSUs Recruit Civil Engineers Through GATE
The official GATE website lists the organisations that use GATE scores for recruitment, but it does not say which of them take civil engineers in any given year, and PSUs change the branches they hire each cycle. The table below covers PSUs that recruitment portals and coaching platforms consistently name as civil-engineering recruiters.
| PSU | Civil post (title varies by year) |
|---|---|
| NTPC | Engineering Executive Trainee (Civil) |
| NHPC | Trainee Engineer (Civil) |
| NPCIL | Executive Trainee (Civil) |
| POWERGRID | Executive Trainee (Civil) |
A PSU missing from this table may still open a civil post in a later cycle, and one that hired civil engineers in the past may not every year. Always check each PSU's current notice rather than relying on a past year's pattern.
PSU Jobs Salary for Civil Engineers
PSU engineering posts are recruited into a fixed IDA (Industrial Dearness Allowance) pay scale for the grade, not a single starting figure — basic pay starts at the bottom of that scale and rises through the grade over several years of increments, before dearness allowance and other perquisites are added on top.
POWERGRID's own wage disclosures (effective 1 January 2017, repeated in its 2023 and 2025 RTI filings) give a concrete, official reference point:
| Grade | IDA pay scale (per month) |
|---|---|
| E1 | Rs 40,000 – Rs 1,40,000 |
| E3 (Executive Trainees are recruited at this level) | Rs 60,000 – Rs 1,80,000 |
Other PSUs set their own scales and may place civil engineering trainees at a different grade, so treat POWERGRID's figures as an illustration of the pay-scale structure rather than a number that applies everywhere — check the specific PSU's recruitment notice or pay-scale disclosure for the exact figure.
How PSU Recruitment Through GATE Works
The steps are broadly similar across PSUs:
- The PSU shortlists candidates by GATE score, category-wise, for the number of posts open that year.
- Shortlisted candidates then go through a group discussion, a personal interview, or both.
- The GATE score typically carries most of the weight in the final merit list, with the group discussion or interview accounting for a smaller share — but the exact split differs by PSU and by year, so read the current notice rather than assuming a fixed ratio.
- Selected candidates then go through document verification and a medical examination before joining.
GATE Cutoff for PSU Civil Posts
PSUs do not publish one fixed cutoff. Each one shortlists the top scorers in a category for the number of vacancies it has, so the cutoff moves every year with the paper's difficulty and the number of posts on offer. Once the GATE 2027 result is out, check each PSU's own notice or shortlist for the year's actual cutoff rather than going by a previous year's number.
When to Apply for PSU Jobs Through GATE
You apply after the GATE result, not before — civil notices usually appear in the weeks and months following it, and each PSU opens applications on its own site and timeline. A GATE score used for PSU recruitment is generally valid only for the same year it was declared; a few PSUs also accept the previous year's scorecard, but this is decided PSU by PSU, so a candidate relying on an older score should confirm this in the specific notice before assuming it will be accepted. (This is different from GATE's validity for M.Tech or PhD admission at IITs and NITs, which runs for three years.)
What to Do Before the GATE 2027 Exam
- Read the exam dates, fees and pattern in our GATE 2027 civil engineering guide.
- Aim for a high score, not just a qualifying one — PSUs shortlist by rank within each category, so every mark matters.
- Keep soft copies of your degree marksheets, category certificate and photograph ready, since most PSU notices ask for these at the application stage.
- Once results are out, set an alert for each PSU's own careers page — notices can open on short notice and close quickly.
- Practise with GATE Civil Engineering previous year papers so your GATE score — and your PSU shortlisting chances — are as strong as possible.
